Quick Summary[]
The three win the match, and Harada-sensei is excited to realize that Arata is the grandson of a famous karuta master. Chihaya, with her new found enthusiasm for karuta, experience mixed feelings about striving for her own goals versus supporting her sister in her modeling career. The three sign up for a team competition. But even as they become closer friends, their various paths in live start to pull them apart.
Long Summary[]
Chihaya, Taichi and Arata beat Hyoro-kun and his friends by a landslide. Harada-sensei learns that Arata is the grandson of Eternal Master Wataya and rejoices in hopes of Arata becoming a master as well. He then asks Taichi and Chihaya if they'd like to join the society. Taichi mumbles, but Chihaya replies saying she has difficulty memorizing all 100 poems. Harada-sensei tells her to think of memorizing 100 poems as making 100 friends. He follows up Taichi's answer. Taichi says he has cram school, but he'll come when he can.
When Chihaya returns home, she sees her sister trying outfits for her audition the succeeding day. Chihaya gets excited over her sister's audition, and begins taking many pictures. However, she remembers what Arata told her about having your own dream, so she decides to work on memorizing the 100 poems instead.
Meanwhile, Arata's father comes home saying something happened to Arata's grandfather.
At the Shiranami Society the next day, Harada-sensei announces a 3 vs. 3 match. Chihaya, Taichi and Arata decide to join as a team. However, unlike the previous genpei-style match, the games are separate, and 2 out of 3 must win for the team to advance. Because of this, they have a crash course.
One evening, Chihaya, Taichi and Arata play in the snow. Arata tells Chihaya she can call him "Arata" instead of "Wataya-kun". Taichi demands that he be permitted to call Arata "Arata" as well. Chihaya giggles and says, "Let's play Karuta together forever!"
At school one morning, Chihaya rejoices over memorizing all 100 poems. However, she overhears that Taichi will be attending a special school. She asks Taichi if the rumor is true. He replies by saying he'll go to that school even if he will no longer be able to play Karuta. Chihaya is upset by this and tells Arata about it. Arata says that he, too, will not be able to play Karuta with Chihaya forever, as he will be returning to Fukui after gradutation because his grandfather collapsed.
